Yvonne McCarthy, CLC – Bariatric Girl

Yvonne had gastric bypass 11 years ago, was certified as a Health and Wellness Coach and has spent the last 10 years paying it forward to the WLS community by volunteering full time in order to help others avoid some of the mistakes she and others have shared with her.

In December of 2001 Yvonne saw Carnie Wilson on Good Morning America and fifteen minutes later she made an appointment for the first consultation available on January 15th 2002. Open RNY was the only choice available and aftercare was absolutely nonexistent. Through an extraordinary chain of events and a great deal of luck, she reached goal and stayed there. After being obese for 30 years and doing everything possible, she was a typical win/fail/win/fail future WLS candidate. Through self-education she realized how key it was to help others which in turn made her accountable and kept her out of her messy head.

Yvonne has spoken at numerous events for the last several years as well as putting on some events of her own that resulted in two surgeries being paid for. She has a returning show on the Weight Loss Surgery Channel, a blog at www.bariatricgirl.com, a Bariatric Girl Facebook page and a you tube channel. Yvonne is an advisory board member for the WLSFA and was honored last year with an award for Philanthropic Volunteer of the Year. She will also be the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.

Yvonne says:

Why do we pigeonhole members of our community? Divided we fall, united we stand. To mentally classify or categorize someone into an oversimplified category often leads to them being put aside or shelved. Carelessly classifying individuals does harm. Pigeonholing has to do with missing opportunities because of careless categorization of individuals when categorization is totally unnecessary. Can we talk? Let’s discuss “Busting WLS Stereotypes. The Good, the Bad, and the very Ugly and how no one is exempt”. The goal of the WLSFA is to save lives. I’m going to remind you why that should be our number one objective. Audience participation will be encouraged.
